Teeth contouring and reshaping

Teeth contouring and reshaping is a cosmetic procedure done by dentists to correct teeth that are crooked, chipped, or could otherwise benefit from a reshaping. Although it is considered a cosmetic procedure, some people may require teeth contouring and reshaping because their teeth are overlapping or gapped and such a procedure could result in better overall health of the mouth.

How teeth contouring and reshaping works

A dentist will first do a thorough examination before attempting any teeth contouring or reshaping. Any significant damage that requires treatment before contouring and reshaping will have to be taken care of first.

During the actual teeth contouring and reshaping procedure, a small amount of tooth enamel is removed and porcelain is added to build up the surface to the desired shape. The surface is finely polished to a smooth finish, and a well-performed teeth contouring and reshaping will result in uniform, evenly spaced teeth that are undetectable as being artificially created.

Extensive work may require several visits to the dentist, but most of the time, one visit is adequate. Most teeth contouring and reshaping does not require anesthetic, and the only side effects commonly reported are a temporary oversensitivity to heat and cold. While not usually cheap, teeth contouring and reshaping is not an excessively expensive procedure and may be financed through the dental office.
