Laser skin resurfacing Continued

CO2 Skin Resurfacing

In CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing a laser wand delivers short rapid pulses of extremely intense light at surface skin layers. The method is so precise that it can work one layer at a time to remove a problem area. This means there is a very low risk of scarring, since a skilled dermatologist can remove just the amount of surface skin as is necessary to produce the desired result. In addition, the dermatologist can heat deeper layers of skin to achieve collagen remodeling that can tighten some sagging of the skin.

The CO2 procedure takes approximately 30 to 60 minutes (for a facial resurfacing). A topical anesthesia is generally required and the dermatological surgeon will ask you to wear protective goggles or glasses. For most patients only one treatment is necessary to achieve their desired results.

Erbium Skin Resurfacing

Erbium Skin Resurfacing (also referred to as erbium:YAG or er:YAG) is similar to CO2 in that it can target varying depths of skin to remove blemishes. The Erbium laser produces a high-powered wavelength of light energy to penetrate the skin surface. As it penetrates the skin it is absorbed by the water contained in the skin's cells and “scattered.”

The Erbium laser is a very precise tool that allows the dermatologic surgeon to target a problem area without damaging surrounding tissue. Like CO2 Laser Skin Resurfacing, there is minimum risk of scarring with this procedure.

Recovery and Results

After the Laser Skin Resurfacing, the dermatologist will apply a sterile dressing that will need to stay in place for 24 hours. You can expect some swelling and pain. Your dermatologist may give you a prescription for pain medication if necessary. When the dressing comes off you will be directed to cleanse the treated area with a dilute solution of vinegar, saline or something similar.

After cleansing, you will apply an ointment as prescribed by your dermatologist. You will need to do this for 4-5 days. It will take at least 10-21 days for the treated areas to heal. Redness due to the treatment will fade over a period of three to six months. A daily application of sunscreen must be applied to protect the new skin from sun damage.

Risks

When a qualified dermatological surgeon performs Laser Skin Resurfacing, the risks are very low. The following complications are possible:
  • Outbreak of whiteheads, treatable at home or in sever cases by your dermatologist

  • Unusually light or dark pigmentation of new skin

  • Outbreak of cold sores in patients prone to such things

  • Infection

  • Scarring (rare)

Choose an experienced dermatologist who is certified by the American Board of Dermatology and follow his/her instructions carefully and your results should be successful.
