Fiberoptic sinus surgery

Fiber Optic Sinus Surgery is often performed when medications have been proven ineffective in the treatment of chronic sinus infections. After an ear, nose, and throat specialist has determined that medications like decongestants and antihistamines cannot work for what is officially described as “acute sinusitis,” this type of surgery becomes a possible option.

This operation is usually performed to open up and drain the sinuses, to prevent drip, or to prevent crusting of the nasal passage. The results should lead to the improved performance of your sinuses and the overall reduction of future sinus infections.

Prior to deciding on fiber optic sinus surgery, patients have typically been suffering from severe sinus pains. Usually, people have already tried other methods for reducing the pain, and have had no luck. Home treatments like humidifiers, over-the-counter decongestants, and nasal steroids have all developed over the years because of the increasing amount of people suffering from severe sinus problems. Unfortunately, these treatments are not always effective, which often turns people to surgery.

Endoscopic Sinus Surgery, or “Fiber Optic Sinus Surgery” is when a very small fiber optic tube is used to remove any abnormalities or obstructive tissues in the sinus cavities. The surgery today is performed in a variety of ways, usually preceded by a CAT scan and a series of tests. Sinus surgery remains as non-invasive as possible, and usually patients are treated on an out-patient basis. This is easily an added patient benefit.
