Eliminating Spider Veins

Spider veins are small veins, close to the surface of the skin, that are red, blue, or purple. They most often appear on thighs, calves, and ankles, and are a very common cosmetic problem among women. In addition to being unsightly, spider veins are associated with burning, cramps, and aching. Spider veins can also appear on the face, and are sometimes linked to varicose veins, which are larger and deeper than spider veins. Because spider veins are a superficial problem, they are relatively easy to treat. A certified plastic surgeon can give you more information specific to your needs.

Basic Treatment

The accepted treatment for spider veins on the legs is called sclerotherapy. The problem veins are injected with a solution that causes them to collapse; this causes the veins to disappear. Although they do serve some purpose, spider veins are not essential, and collapsing them does not interfere with your blood flow.

It usually takes at least two treatments for sclerotherapy to be effective. It may take months or even up to a year for the veins or bruising to disappear. Although the original spider veins treated will never show up again, you may develop other spider veins that will require treatment later. Most veins will disappear completely, but some may still be faintly visible. Regardless, they will look better after treatment than they did before.

Complications associated with sclerotherapy are very rare. Consult your doctor about the possibility of allergic reactions and blood clots. You will be instructed before the procedure on how to prevent blood clots by caring for your legs immediately after. There may be some mild discomfort following the procedure, but this should not last more than a few days.

Laser Treatment

If spider veins on the face are problematic, they can be treated with laser therapy. Laser therapy does not work on the legs, but because spider veins on the face are smaller and closer to the surface, they respond very well. The procedure uses a small laser to heat the veins until they collapse; it is painless and fast. Additionally, there is no bruising or needle marks. It can be expensive, but it only takes one session, and the veins will not return.

Choose a Professional

If you decide that spider vein treatment is right for you, choose a qualified plastic surgeon. Ask any questions you have upfront, and make sure you are comfortable with your physician. Spider vein treatment is not often covered by insurance, so be aware of what the final cost will be. However, keep in mind that the spider veins will not reappear, and you will be able to enjoy having more attractive legs.
