Cosmetic muscle enhancement Continued
How the procedure is done
Unlike breast implants, cosmetic muscle enhancement procedures use a semi-solid silicone implant to give a more muscular look and feel. During the initial consultation, each implant is carefully sized to the individual patient to make certain of the desired effect. In the case of pectoral enhancements, the implant is inserted through an incision under the arm into a pocket between the ribs and the muscles. For calf implants, the silicone pieces are inserted over the muscle through an incision at the crease of the knee. Particular care must be taken with this procedure, as the area affected by the implant is small.
Possible Risks
As with every surgery, there are risks attached to cosmetic muscle enhancement. However, since this type of surgery is still relatively uncommon, it is advisable to seek out a plastic surgeon that either specializes in muscle enhancement or does these types of procedure on a regular basis. Risks that are particular to this family of surgeries include infection, bleeding or hematoma, nerve and/or muscle damage, implant slippage and asymmetry. Serious, though rare, risks include rejection of the implant and scarring.
Alternatives
Cosmetic muscle enhancement is most often performed to help the patient's self-esteem and self-image. In cases where the modification will ultimately be slight, the patient may be able to achieve a similar result by targeted exercise aimed at a particular muscle group. Another alternative is to accept the shape of one's body, which can often be achieved through psychotherapy or counseling.
