Cosmetic muscle enhancement

Cosmetic muscle enhancement is a family of procedures designed to add size and shape to the chest, calves and biceps. In most cases, these procedures are performed on an outpatient basis with a local anesthetic and intravenous sedation. Recovery time varies depending on the procedure, though in most cases there is a primary recovery period of about a week followed by a long-term recovery period, where some stress can be put on the affected areas, which can last up to two months. While the following information represents a general overview of the procedure, any decision to receive cosmetic muscle enhancement should be discussed with a licensed plastic surgeon as individual cases vary.

Who gets cosmetic muscle enhancement?

The vast majority of individuals receiving cosmetic muscle enhancement are healthy, adult males. For most, the enhancement is meant to aid in the self-esteem of the individual. This is particularly true of pectoral and bicep enhancements. An increasing number of women have shown interest in calf and buttocks implants for similar reasons.

Most of the implants involved in these procedures were, however, designed to help individuals who have suffered from several rare infections and birth defects. Calf implants, for instance, were originally put into use to help polio, spina bifida and clubfoot, to give patients more anatomical balance in the calf muscle area. Pectoral enhancements were designed for sufferers of spina bifida, Marfan's Syndrome, and Poland's Syndrome.
