Cosmetic Surgeon Continued
Credentials and Qualifications
Even though elective procedures may not be that complex, all surgeries involve risk and should not be taken lightly. One criticism of plastic surgery within the United States is that it is legal for any doctor to perform cosmetic surgeries, regardless of their actual specialization. For any cosmetic surgical procedure, a patient should check the doctor's credentials. Due to the financially lucrative nature of the cosmetic industry, there are numerous organizations and associations in the field that misleadingly refer to themselves as ‘boards'. A qualified cosmetic surgeon who is board-certified will gain their certification from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. The American Board of Medical Specialties is the only board that governs American physicians, and they only recognize certifications from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. MD's certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery should be qualified to perform any type of cosmetic surgery. After you find the right surgeon, obtain as much information as you can about the procedure, ask as many questions as you can, and be sure to listen closely to what the doctor tells you is reasonable to actually expect from the results.
