Breast Reduction

There is an attitude in our society that perceives large breasts as being representative of femininity, beauty, and fertility. But large, pendulous breasts are a bane to many women who experience chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain from their weight. Other women suffer from skeletal deformities, poor posture, and breathing problems, and bra straps may cause skin irritation or leave indentations in the back and shoulders. Some women and teenage girls may be extremely self-conscious of their breast size, while others may feel physically hampered and unable to engage in the activities they enjoy.

Breast Reduction Surgery

As medical and surgical techniques advance, breast reduction, or reduction mammaplasty as it is technically called, has emerged as a viable option for women seeking to adjust their breast size to a more comfortable level. This varies greatly from the typical motives behind breast augmentation surgery. Reduction surgery is usually performed on woman seeking relief from physical discomfort and not for cosmetic reasons. Candidates for breast reduction usually have very large, sagging breasts that cause them physical discomfort and limit their ability to engage in activities. Women who have had the surgery performed range in age from their teens to their 80's. Reduction surgery is not typically performed until full development has been reached, but on occasion it has been performed on younger woman suffering serious discomfort. The procedure is not recommended for women who plan to breast feed children.

Breast Reduction Procedures

The most common procedure in breast reduction surgery involves three incisions. One is made around the areola, one runs from the areola to the crease underneath the breast, and a third follows the breast crease. The plastic surgeon will then remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin, and shift the nipple and areola to a higher position. The skin is then pulled down to reshape the breasts. The areola may also be reduced in size, if applicable. Liposuction may be used to contour areas below the arm. The entire procedure is performed while the patient is under general anesthesia.
