Breast Lift
Pregnancy, nursing, and the force of gravity can act on a woman's breasts and alter their shape. As the skin loses its elasticity the breasts lose their firmness, their shape may distort, and they may begin to sag. Even weight loss, something usually associated with good changes in physical appearance, can change the breasts and cause a drooping appearance. While woman of past generations had no choice but to accept these changes as part of life and aging, modern medical technologies and techniques offer new choices.
Breast Lift vs. Breast Augmentation
Breast lift surgeries are becoming increasingly popular as women seek to regain or maintain their youthful shapes. A breast lift is a surgical procedure known as a mastopexy that raises and reshapes sagging breasts. Unlike breast augmentation procedures, a breast lift does not change the size of your breasts. Patients who are satisfied with their breast size can have a breast lift done to raise and firm them. Other woman, who may be unhappy that they've lost breast volume as well, can have implants inserted at the same time as the breast lift, in order to increase breast size while also enhancing the shape and breast position.
How Breast Lifts Work
During a breast lift procedure, three incisions are made – one around the areola, another running from the areola to below the breast, and one below the crease of the breast. The surgeon moves the nipple and areola to a higher position, then removes excess skin tissue from beneath the breast. By closing the remaining skin, the skin is tightened, and the breasts are lifted into place.
